Challenging Behaviors

I think this section, called Challenging Behaviors, will be popular as it hits on our pain points!

For example:

  • What do I do when my child is rude?

  • How can I help my child be less controlling?

  • How do I respond when my child says, “I’m so stupid!”?

  • My child doesn’t “do” non-preferred tasks - help!

…. and more.

For these posts, my goal is to help us all dig deep and understand why these behaviors happen in the first place. Because, when we work to truly understand why a child is doing something (that yes, may frustrate us), we will be in the best place possible to connect with them, provide assistance in a way that is effective and helpful to them, and ultimately, guide them toward building important life skills such as self-awareness, self-advocacy, self-regulation, and thoughtful decision making.

Importantly, to get there, we have to create an environment in which they feel safe enough to work through their own frustrations, fears, and worries, with openness, vulnerability, and courage.

Declarative language and co-regulation helps with ALL of this.

I hope you find these posts helpful!

Have a great week!

And ICYMI…

Have you seen the section on Episodic Memory (which includes a post on how we form shared narratives with others)? Check it out — and let me know if you had the same haircut we did growing up!

I loved this podcast interview on co-regulation with Caitlin Lopez MS, CCC-SLP of This Speech Life!

Registration is open!
