Taking it Up a Level

In trying to decide which section to pull together next, I was strongly guided in one direction.

My friend Eileen’s mother, Kathleen, who I wrote about a couple of months ago in this post on dementia and neurogenic communication disorders, passed away peacefully this past week.

More recently, I loved learning of another passion of hers - ice cream! Since June, our weekly routine changed from coffee on a Monday morning, to coffee ice cream on a Friday evening. And our co-regulatory pattern became “bringer” (me) and “eater” (her!). She always impressed me with her ability to finish her servings, no matter how big. Amazingly, though I suppose not surprisingly, Eileen and her family discovered that Kathleen passed away on National Ice Cream Day.

I am sad and will miss Kathleen. But, I am also very grateful I had the chance to get to know her better in the past year. Thank you for keeping Eileen and her family in your thoughts this week.

As Kathleen helps me segue, the next section of posts, called: Taking it up a Level, is ready and will help you deepen your understanding, use, and application of declarative language and co-regulation. This section is geared towards those who have learned the basics and want to keep going!

Topics and concepts included in this section include dementia and other neurogenic communication disorders, interoception, “making eye contact” (and why we want to move way from this idea and term), perspective taking, sharing different opinions, and more.

I hope these next level posts are helpful to you!

And, as for next week, I’m planning to tackle a section I think will be popular: how DL and CR help with challenging behaviors.

Stay tuned and have a great week!

This Speech Life Podcast

I am thrilled to share this interview with Caitlin Lopez! Our conversation goes deep to capture co-regulation as I think about it through an SLP lens, to explain why it is important, and to share several ideas around how to put it into practice right now.
